Inside Hangar 86: Dyson’s new top-secret home
Just before the automotive engineers moved in and its vast hangar doors were for ever closed to the public, we took the opportunity to step inside H86 to take an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the space Dyson is already using to design its “radically different” electric vehicle.
H86 is a “Type D” hangar which is 93m long, 47m wide and 20m tall. Its hangar doors were painstakingly restored and are now fixed in place, permanently open.
Hangar 86 is the first of Hullavington airfield’s buildings to be restored. Its innovative design means there are no floor-to-ceiling support beams inside H86.
Double height mezzanines and meeting areas are lit by Dyson’s Cu-Beam light. Breakout areas and open plan offices are designed to encourage people to stop and talk, not email.
