  • November was a relatively calmer month for Edtech funding worldwide, with over $500m raised. Asia, Brazil and the US respectively account for a quarter of global fundraising.
  • In China, after Edtech startups took a serious hit this summer due to government restrictions on K12 tutoring companies, Edtech fundraising is slowly picking up (15% of global fundraising) in lifelong learning, and corporate training.
  • Edtech has gained significant ground within Brazil’s education sector over recent years. This past month alone, Brazil raised the most globally, accounting for 27% of global venture funding. Isaac is one of the startups that contributed to this growth. It is a a Brazilian fintech digitizing the entire tuition payment process for schools which announced a $125m Series B round.

M&A Deals

  • The most important deal of the month is the acquisition of Busuu- a mobile app for language learning-by Chegg- a student media learning platform offering services to universities and community colleges. Busuu provides courses in 12 different languages to more than 500,000 paying users across more than 160 countries. This acquisition allows Chegg to expand its business and to accelerate Busuu’s growth in the US market.
  • Blackstone acquired Moonbug for $3bn. Moonbug is an entertainment company focused on early age content. The company acquires, creates, produces, distributes children’s video and audio content. Founded in 2018, Moonbug had raised $272 million from Goldman Sachs, Raine Group and others investors. This acquisition is the sign that there are strong upsides in early age entertainment.
  • Kickboard is a behavior management tool for K12 which address students well being and mental health issues. Through data analytics, it allows teachers to increase engagement, implement culture initiatives or fight absenteeism. The company had raised c.$8m since its foundation in 2010. Powerschool is the leader K12 management tools, this acquisition expand its offer of software for schools.
