Innovation is Built on Trust

Pro(ductivity) Tip# 19

I have been thinking alot lately about human connection and the important role it plays in creating new ideas and mobilizing collective action. The key to it all I believe is trust. There has to be a basic level of trust between people before there is an exchange of ideas. It is the act of sharing that drives innovation within a community.

Trust is often viewed as a soft and mushy concept. As a result I do not believe it gets its full due. In my view trust is powerful and is absolutely necessary for wealth generating enterprises to be created.

There are a few things that are helpful.

  • Be authentic. Let your quirks and eccentricities show to people. Let them see how you are. Let them see you are a real person grappling with the same pressures that they do. Sharing yourself encourages reciprocity. People will also share who they are with you. This is the foundation for relationships.
  • Keep your word. If you say you will do something do it.
  • Remember the details. Remember what people tell you. People’s lives are important to them. If they feel something was important enough to share with you, it’s important enough for you to remember.
