Mr. Gates’ personal vision about the AI revolution

  • GPT models should enhance the productivity of humans as their PAs.
  • AI can help treat unfairness in health, education, and climate change.
  • AI in Health: paperwork, triage, new machines, training in different languages, drug discovery, side effects and dosage of drugs, and several aspects of farming (e.g., better seeds, advising farmers on the local weather, new vaccines for livestock).
  • AI in Education: tailor-made content, matrices of measurement and feedback, assessments, and career planning.

Risks and opportunities

  • AI can’t understand context and has no consciousness.
  • “Strong” AI AGI can conflict with humanity’s interests.
  • Flood of future companies building Edge-AI
  • Single AGI or many GPT PAs in the future? A challenge.

Mr. Gates’ four suggestions for thought leaders

  • to keep a balance between fear and hope about future AI capabilities
  • to reduce inequities with the help of the governments and philanthropists
  • to remember that AI is in its nascent stage today; its limitations will be gone tomorrow
  • to think of artificial general intelligence (AGI) as the future

Three books that shaped Mr. Gates thinking on AI

  • Superintelligence — Nick Bostrom
  • Life 3.0 — Max Tegmark
  • A Thousand Brains — Jeff Hawkins

Deep dive

The age of AI has begun.
