Remote: The new norm of work

Work is definitely not what it used to be, not only the pandemic has affected this, but the evolution of the types of jobs we encounter. Remote work is emerging, as 55% of businesses globally offer some capacity for it. Remote work has been adopted by the vast majority during this pandemic, 88% of organizations, worldwide, obliged or encouraged their employees to work from home, but, 4.7 million, which make about 3.4% of the US workforce, were already working remotely before the pandemic. Will remote become the new normal?

There are several ways in which people can work remotely. It can be 100% remote, if the person is in a different part of the world, or the person can work remotely the majority of the time but go to the office when necessary. Working in these ways has several benefits such as:

  1. More freedom for employees.
  2. Increases employee productivity.
  3. Finding talent anywhere in the world.
  4. Cutting costs such as office and travel expenses.

But there are also some disadvantages such as:

  1. Isolation, as remote might make employees feel less connected to the company.
  2. Lack of relationships amongst coworkers.
  3. Increased distractions, as the house has likely more distractions than the office.
  4. Decreased work/life balance, as not having a physical distinction between where an employee works and where they spend their free time can actually make it more difficult for them to unplug.

Remote jobs can be found in every industry right now, from those that you’d expect (tech, freelancing, etc.) to those that are a bit more surprising (education, healthcare, law), remote jobs can be found in nearly any industry. If you’re looking for a remote job, there’s never been a better time to research your options. Use resources like your professional network, remote job boards, and lists of fully-distributed companies to begin your search. And if you are looking to hire, start thinking about building remote teams, this will allow to hire the best talent possible anywhere in the world.
