Are you looking for the best lineups in FIFA 22? Congratulations, you came to the right place. Thanks to our partner NikLugi, we get helpful tips from a real FIFA pro. Together, we tell you which combo of formations paired with tactics and instructions is the best for FIFA Ultimate Team.

Of course, the first thing you need is a good team, because only with the right players is it worth looking for a good lineup. Or in other words: Even the most sophisticated 3–5–2 with false wing backs and fluid attackers won’t help you if you start with a bad squad in Ultimate Team. So the very first thing you need to do is to build a good starter team.

FIFA 22: The Best Lineups — Formations — Tactics — Instructions

Generally, you can split your team setup into three different categories. The formation determines the most important thing, which is the formation in which your team will play. You know, three at the back, four at the back, 4–2–3–1 or 4–3–3, that kinda thing. The possibilities for this are very diverse in FIFA 22.

Once you have decided on a basic formation, you should also look at the tactics. Here, you can tell your team whether they should press, how they should behave after losing the ball, or whether the wingers should stay in narrow or wide positions and much more. This will be discussed in detail in a moment.

Finally, you should look for individual instructions. Are your fullbacks standing extremely high all the time and not defending properly? Maybe you didn’t set them to “stay behind during attacks”. The instructions are again extremely helpful in FIFA 22 to tell your players how they have to act across the field.

Okay, you probably already know the individual menus anyway — very little has changed in the last few years. Time to go through the best setups.

4–2–2–2 — The FIFA 22 Meta Formation?

The 4–2–2–2 was already very popular in FIFA 21. With a stable back four and potentially four attackers upfront, the system offers both a compact defense (two DMs help, of course) and danger in attack.

The 4–2–2–2 seems to be one of the strongest lineups in FIFA 22 so far. You should use the following tactics and instructions if you want to be successful with this formation:

Defense:

  • Balanced/Press after possession loss
  • 45 Width
  • 60 Depth

Offense:

  • Balanced
  • Direct Passing
  • 50 Width
  • Players in box: 6
  • Corners: 2
  • Free Kicks: 2

Instructions:

  • RB/LB: Stay back while attacking
  • CDM: One should stay back while attacking — The other one should be “balanced”
  • CAM: Stay forward, go central

Whether you prefer to play “balanced” or press after losing the ball is of course a question of the score and your own quality, as well as that of your opponent. Be careful not to press for 90 minutes (especially not with permanent pressing), otherwise your players will lose their stamina extremely quickly.

4–3–2–1 — The World Champion’s Formation

None other than MoAuba took a liking to the 4–2–3–1 formation. The FIFA 19 world champion seems to use this formation again in FIFA 22, among others. Professionals have of course always practiced several formations — but to play with the same formation as a world champion sounds quite nice.

Many YouTubers rely on variable formation. In the offense, a lot happens in the center — but your defense is not left completely alone thanks to a compact midfield. Use these tactics and instructions to make the 4–3–2–1 a strong formation:

Defense:

  • Balanced
  • 35 Width
  • 50 Depth

Offense:

  • Balanced
  • Direct Passing
  • 40 Width
  • Players in the Box: 7
  • Corners: 1
  • Free Kicks: 1

Instructions:

  • RB/LB: Stay back while attacking
  • CDM: Stay back while attacking
  • CMs: One should stay back while attacking — The other one should be “balanced”
  • LW and RW: Stay central
  • CF: Stay forward

With this formation, you really have a lot of freedom, but you should only play it if you don’t use crosses and headers. The offense impresses with sheer power. With many fast passes, you can combine your opponent to death.

But remember this: the most important thing is that you like your chosen formation and enjoy playing with it.
