“Beware the Rods from God”
The fallacy that each day is a lot like the next speaks more of our personal predilections than some sort of ultimate truth. It belies a false certainty about the world and reflects an absence of imagination.
Sunny Friday afternoons are prime time for venturing out to the Oregon City Brewery and savoring their latest creation. Hopped-up IPAs always attract my attention. But it was a cool, wet Thursday afternoon when I actually showed up, not prime time. Some find this sort of weather off-putting, but I appreciate the way it winnows out the frivolous and narrows the crowd to serious connoisseurs. Evidently, there weren’t too many philosophical beer drinkers around on Thursday because I was the only one beneath the covered outdoor deck behind the tasting room.
I had strategically picked a seat beneath one of the radiant heaters mounted in the oak-brown rafters above the deck, and I was contemplating my Hazy IPA when he sat down across the table from me. I glanced around, noticing the eleven empty picnic tables surrounding me before peering over my beer to see what the wind had blown in.
