How to hack a Hangover ?
While it’s true that the best way to avoid a hangover is to not drink in the first place, there are moments when that good judgment is pushed aside for a night of fun. Let’s Face it — Not many of us restrict ourselves to consume only one drink when we hang out with friends, on occasions, holidays or even every now and then. However, there are certain things you can do to fend off nausea, headache, dizziness, and general misery that often follows an intense night of drinking. Some of them are listed below:
1) Drink Responsibly — The intensity of the hangover is directly related to the alcohol consumed hence the best thing to do is drink in moderation. What alcohol you choose to have can make a significant difference as some alcohols have a lot more toxic byproducts from fermentation than others. They are, in order from best to worst: Vodka, gin, tequila, whiskey, other distilled spirits, dry cider, dry champagne, dry white wine, white wines, red wines, dessert wines and beer. So pick wisely.
2) Keep yourself hydrated — Alcohol causes us to lose water and therefore it is absolutely essential to keep ourselves hydrated. It would be best to have a glass of coconut water or Gatorade in between the drinks but if that is not available, do not skip a glass of water after every drink. Try to limit yourself from consuming coffee on the day you are drinking as the caffeine in the coffee causes dehydration. If you absolutely need something, try doing with a cup of green tea which has lesser or no caffeine content. Before going to sleep drink a big glass of water.
3) Pre-Tox — Alcohol is known to deplete array of nutrients in your body including vitamins B1, B6, B12, folic acids, zinc, magnesium and more — making you feel edgy, anxious and exhausted the day after a long night out. Eating pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, avocados, papaya, watermelon, strawberries, etc before consuming alcohol will help you lessen the hangover.
4) Eat well — The golden rule “Never Drink on an Empty Stomach” should be taken seriously. Eat a meal containing carbs, protein, and fat before you take your first sip of alcohol. For Eg — Ditch the salad and pick a burger.
Do not try to beat the hangover the following day with another drink as it will only get worse. These are just personal experiences that I have shared and there may be instances where it may not work. Having said this there are various things you can do too to have fun and ditch the alcohol. Plan a picnic, a day trip, go hiking, simply have a gaming night with friends, watch movies, go for dinners, go for karaoke, bowling, go for Improv/comedy shows, watch plays, go for architecture tours, photographic tours, concerts, festivals, camping, amusement parks, moonlight drives, etc. You will be amazed to know how much fun all these things can be too.
