My Adventure at Eclipse of the Garden

A friend of mine wanted to go to the Eclipse of the Garden event at Oregon Garden to film the solar eclipse. The location would be in the path of totality although not on the center line. I thought that it would be a great experience to have two days before my birthday, so I agreed. I didn’t have solar filters or a zoom lens for my camera, so I decided just to film the experience and the beautiful gardens.

We settled into a spot near the water garden that was a little quieter and far away from the main stage. It was a location that we had scouted out a few weeks earlier. The setting was beautiful, and someone near us set up a huge telescope. The view of the partial eclipse through the telescope was awesome. It showed a large view of the Sun, and I was able to see the sun spots moving around and some of the texture of the Moon.

The total eclipse was amazing; there were arms of solar flares reaching up and out as far out as the width of the sun itself. There was a lot more to it than I expected. None of the photos or film I have seen online look like what I experienced in person. I think this is because light is very hard to capture on film.

Here are some photos of the gardens and one of the crescent shadows falling through tree leaves at the entrance to the gardens. The video is our first video on Earthvillage about my experience at the gardens.
