The Hong Kong police force has announced that they will be launching a new app โ€” HKSOS โ€” at the end of the year especially for hikers in the event that they go missing.

The app works by people inputting the time, date and area of their hiking into the new app before their trip, so AI can work out where rescuers should look if theyโ€™re in danger.

The police says searches can be very challenging, taking anything from a few hours to a week, because remote hiking trails often have no mobile coverage.

The Competition Commission has begun a consultation about proposed changes by foodpanda and Deliveroo concerning the requirements they enforce on their associated restaurants.

This decision follows the discovery by the antitrust regulator that the two firms have been offering reduced commission rates for restaurants that exclusively collaborate with one of them, but penalize the establishment if it partners with other food delivery services. Additionally, restaurants are prohibited from providing lower prices on their own channels or rival online platforms.

The public has until June 15 to submit their opinions on the matter.

On Tuesday, the government declared that Covid-19 is no longer considered an โ€œemergencyโ€ and has reduced its response to an โ€œalertโ€ level after more than three years. This change was based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation and local evaluations.

I recall that when the CDC downgraded SARS more than 20 years ago, I was working with the government, and we staged a giant โ€˜mask-off eventโ€™ to celebrate. Frankly, after more than three years of Covid, I am happy to celebrate quietly.

Hong Kong was hit by a major thunderstorm in the early hours of Thursday morning, which enlightened the journey of many early commuters, including one hard-working Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) presenter.

Hong Kong Observatory hoisted a six and a half hour thunderstorm warning at 3.15 am and, during that time, Hong Kong was struck 12,367 times by lightning.

It must have been pretty grueling for residents of an apartment in Wo Tin Estate in Tuen Mun. A lightning bolt was filmed shooting across the sky at 6.50 am, hitting a flat on the 27th floor of Wo Hei House with such force that sparks could be seen flying.

The residents were reported safe and sound. One wag commented online that the God of Thunder must have come down to the mortal realm to spread good cheer.

Until next week โ€ฆ
