Mariborsko Pohorje

When you tell a friend, ‘Oh, I went skiing in the Alps last weekend,’ they will surely presume you went to Austria or Switzerland. What are the odds they’ll think of Slovenia, a small, easy-to-miss country squished between Austria, Italy, and Croatia? This is when you can surprise and amaze them with the story of your time at Mariborsko Pohorje!

Located just south of the city of Maribor, the largest ski resort in Slovenia is situated on a medium-high mountain range in the Central Alps called Maribor Pohorje. Surrounded by major cities and rivers, this ski resort is a favourite weekend getaway for most Croatians, as well as many other Europeans.

Imagine for yourself a winter scene: it’s a quiet Friday afternoon; the border crossings to Slovenia are packed, crammed, absolutely stuffed with vacationers; all are champing at the bit to indulge in a pleasant weekend at Mariborsko Pohorje. And why exactly? Because it has it all.

Although it is a well-known tourist destination, visited by avid skiers and sightseers alike, the natural beauty of the mountain has been preserved — 70% of its surface remains covered in forest trees.

The mountain boasts well-kept slopes for skiers of all skill levels, so all can enjoy themselves, be they absolute beginners or seasoned experts. For those yearning for freer adventure, there are trekking routes and cross-country ski runs, as well as a variety of opportunities for snowboarders, hikers, and mountain bikers. You name it, and Mariborsko Pohorje has it!

For most, the sparkling white slopes seem to be calling your name — and their call can be hard to resist. But, if the slopes somehow do not entice you, there are many great bars and cafés where you can sit, relax, and enjoy a drink while observing skiers passing by like pros — or else falling on their butts before your eyes — sure to make you laugh from the comfort of an armchair. And for the purest relaxation, don’t forget my all-time favourite winter drink: a steaming cup of fresh-mulled wine.

Maybe we’ll meet you there. Maybe I’ll be the one falling on my face just feet away. (No, not maybe — for sure it will be me!)

But who cares if I fall? I’m at Mariborsko Pohorje, and I love it!
