Updates from 900 Hallway Little Acts of Kindness Initiative

3 weeks ago 900 Hallway Little Acts of Kindness Project: Be Kind! students started sowing the seeds of kindness in celebration of SERT Team’s Earth Day Activities. As they explored ways to be kinder to themselves, others and the environment, their dedication to little acts of kindness inspired engaging conversations, provided hours of hands on activities, earned them awards (including some serious bragging rights) and their fruits of labor — jalapeno and cilantro seedlings are now growing in our sun bathed windowsills.

The SERT team hosted a series of events the week after spring break in honor of Earth Day including an after school trash cleanup, a lunchtime carnival with activities and a recycled art contest.

Students regularly visit to take care of their seedlings and continue to earn SSL hours during their lunch break.

During each visit Project: BE Kind! volunteers continue to earn SSL hours while they brainstorm about more acts of kindness for our school, the environment, our local and global community.

As their next kind step, Project: Be Kind! volunteers choose to work on creating and writing postcards to Ukrainian students.

Students who are interested in contributing to the activity can create their postcards during 5th period lunch break at 900 Hallway with Ms. U or after school to earn Student Service Learning Hours.

Students can send Ms. U an email message to get their initial approval for their SSL Project and materials needed for their project.

Last month, during SERT Team’s Earth Day celebrations, Project: Be Kind! students brainstormed about why new inventions that go beyond recycling are necessary to protect local environments and turned their ideas into action with art and recycling projects.

7th grader, Sayra L. repurposed orange juice containers into real life terrariums complete with compost and propagated plants which are now adorning our 900 hallway.

As one of this year’s Earth Day Awardee, her project earned Sayra the coolest earth friendly shirt from the SERT Team! Go Green, team!

Last but not least, Project: Be Kind! volunteers are rising in support of students of Ukraine. Eastern’s online fundraiser campaign kicked in this week, in preparation of Mother’s Day and Teachers Appreciation Week.

Eastern Nation is calling everyone to make a difference and “Gift Better” in support of students in need in Ukraine and children who fled Ukraine in recent weeks and are now living as refugees in neighboring countries.

Eastern Eagles Rising For Refugee Children

Students, staff and the community can submit their financial contributions through Eastern’s online fundraiser in support of UNICEF’s efforts.

Students can earn SSL hours for time spent planning and marketing their efforts in support of the campaign.

“Standing Up”

Your kind donation can give Ukrainian refugee kids the support they need during forced and life-changing displacement. Support a Student in Need: https://unicefusa.donorsupport.co/-/NDHAXFGQ

“Stay Strong!!”

For their generous contribution of $50 or more, staff will receive a potted baby jalapeno or cilantro plant as a thank you gift (while supplies last). Project: Be Kind! Students have been lovingly taking care of these plants since seedlings.

P.S. Help us spread the news by sharing the link with like minded, caring people like you!

Important note: Students wishing to receive SSL hours must send an email message to Ms. U for an approval and must plan to include a detailed description of all activities and the amount of time that will be spent on each activity.

Thank YOU for Rising UP for kindness, hope and peace!
