Non-Members Viewers after the New Medium Partner Program

Why my earnings decrease after August 2023

Since August, Medium has introduced revisions to its Partner Program. The goal is to pursue high quality human writing. To do so, Medium is changing the following points:

1. Prioritizing Quality over Quantity: Unlike many other content platforms that favor superficial clickbait, Medium rewards the significance of well-crafted, insightful content that enriches readers’ lives.
2. Recognizing Engagement: In the updated Partner Program, Medium acknowledges the influence of reader engagement and nurtures a dynamic ecosystem where writers are acknowledged based on the depth of their interactions with readers.
3. Introducing More Meaningful Metrics for Earnings: In addition to member read/listening time, which remains a primary factor, engagement indicators such as claps, highlights, replies, and follows now contribute to earnings. However, only the initial instance of each engagement by a reader is considered in earnings. Medium’s aim is to identify and reward story quality by transcending mere attention-grabbing metrics. Stories that ignite discussions and inspire meaningful interactions with readers are regarded as indicators of high quality and are rewarded accordingly.
