Last year, at the Montreal Streetfood Festival, I was introduced to the genius of a dessert called the croffle. A mix between the crispy croissant and the sweet waffle, this delightful dish was a combination of the two carbs that my heart absolutely adores, and hence, it had me in a complete chokehold. The very next day, I set out to find a store that sells them throughout the year because there was no way I was going to let this delicacy be a blue-moon occurrence. That’s when I first stumbled upon Dessert Coréen Crofre: a quaint bakery located inside Marché La Pantry, at 4207 Notre Dame Street West (and two other locations, as I’ve recently discovered), selling the best croffles I would ever taste. Since then I have tried croffles at multiple food fests and even a couple of shops but, trust me, none compare to this brilliant café.

Dessert Coréen Crofre currently offers 17 topping options for the baked delicacy, ranging from a plain croffle to one covered with caramelized bananas that have a sugary crust and are coated with chopped walnuts — their banana bruleé flavor (one of my favorites). Almost every flavor comes with a layer of whipped cream, a dash of sugary syrup, or a sprinkle of powdered sugar, in addition to the main topping you choose. So far, I have tried the fruits and Nutella, Lotus, Oreo, and banana bruleé flavors, and neither have disappointed.

The Lotus one has crushed Lotus biscuits spread all over the generous whipped cream, garnished with a full biscuit, a drizzle of caramel, and a sprinkle of sea salt. The Oreo one is similar, with crushed and full Oreo biscuit toppings, instead of the Lotus, but minus the caramel and sea salt. However, it’s the fruits and Nutella one that always seems to be a fan favorite. As is obvious by the name, it has a spread of cut-up bananas and strawberries atop the cream and a hearty drizzle of the Nutella spread. If you feel indecisive, I suggest you go for either the Lotus or the banana bruleé.

The croffle itself is more sweet than salty, has a crunchy exterior, and a spongy interior. I’m not sure why I didn’t think of it earlier — it is simply a croissant roll cooked in a waffle maker instead of baked in the oven — but it is seriously a stroke of genius. However, although it seems simple, it is hard to get it as perfect as this charming bakery does. Neither are the croffles soggy, nor are they too hard, the topping is generous and filling, and I promise it tastes like heaven in your mouth. They even pre-cut it into pieces so that I don’t look like an animal trying to tug it apart when chomping down on it!

Therefore, this place has my whole heart. I have their croffles at least once every week and, while they may not be good for my health, they are certainly good for my soul. Every person I’ve introduced to this delight continues to thank me for opening their eyes to the culinary genius of this simple yet mouth-watering dessert — and so will you, I hope. If you get to any more flavors before me, please report back in detail so I can indulge in some more of this guilty but gratifying pleasure.
