Gourmet Griffintown: My best-kept secret

In a city brimming with culinary options, Gourmet Griffintown managed to carve out space in my heart as one of the best sandwich places in Montreal. Located at 1308 Notre Dame West, the halal fast food joint offers a variety of menu items, such as sandwiches, wraps, burgers, salads, fries, and poutine— all of which are prepared with the freshest ingredients.

The shop itself is a small corner boutique with few seats set up for those who want to dine in. The man behind the counter, however, is the real beauty of the place. He will always greet you with a smile, prepare your food with care and love, and send you off with a smile as well. As he is the only one running the show, the kitchen is only open for orders from 12 pm to 6:30 pm, Monday through Saturday, and closes for an hour at 3 pm every day.

As you enter the store, you’re greeted with the welcoming aroma of freshly baked bread. You see all the fresh ingredients laid out and the oven and stove ready to prepare your food in front of you. The indecisive in me got spoiled by the delicious options available and so, I ended up getting the pepperoni pizza and the chicken sandwich.

The pepperoni pizza is an absolute dream for cheese lovers. It has the perfect ratio of pepperoni to cheese to bread, and the cheese pull is to die for. I asked for a bit of olive oil and some crushed chili pepper on top, which really brought the flavor home.

The chicken sandwich, however, is my favorite item on this entire menu. The bread is so fresh, just out of the oven, crispy outside and perfectly soft inside. The filling of chicken, vegetables, cheese, and sauce, is so generous it is always overflowing. Each flavor balances the other and even after my last bite, I’m always left wanting more.

Gourmet Griffintown is also one of my go-to stops because of its affordability. The personal pizza is only $10+tax and the sandwich is $11+tax, yet both are full enough meals to feed one person — in this economy I consider this a gold mine. In a city where quality often comes at a high price, this lowkey food joint definitely stands out for its superior quality at a fair price.

If I could, I would have their sandwiches every day of every week. I can’t be happier to have found the spot and that I get to show it off to whoever visits the city. It is a must-try for locals and tourists alike. Trust me — you won’t regret it.

Overall Rating: 10/10 😚✨
