Platform is to Media what Location is to Real Estate
Platform is to media what location is to real estate. The perfect home with cutting edge appliances expertly intermingled with soft touches of comfort would be unappealing to any purchaser were it squeezed between the city dump, a six lane highway, and a local paper factory pumping puffs of sulfite and ammonia into the immediate atmosphere.
Accordingly, the best content — rife with color, a potent message, and stunning images — accomplishes little if dependent upon the wrong platform. To those well versed in pillars of advertising and marketing, this is not news. Content that could send people flocking to the establishment in question, means nothing if the desired audience never catches a glimpse.
The media side, the perspective of brands, publishers, or advertisers whose profit depends upon the effective dissemination of and high engagement with content, a degree of dependability is also sought after when defining a perfect platform. The desired demographic can’t just be tuned into a platform, the connection ought to be strong. The marketing and media worlds seek the assurance of firm guidelines, codes of conduct that promise their content will not leave a platform, continuously appearing before the right eyes.
Regarding the Food Internet, social media is generally agreed to be the best neighborhood. Though limited to sound, image, and the suggestions of friends and family, the content of the Food Internet brings all the lushness and warmth of food itself. Pictures of matcha green lattes or the cheddar-yellow of hot macaroni and cheese color this digital corner, YouTube cooking shows never fail to miss the searing hiss of a stir fry, and all of which made oh so easily sent to family, friends, or with whomever else one chooses to dine. The vibrancy and community of food is matched by the capabilities of social media, and every social media user, if not an associate of foodie culture, is a diner.
Social media continues to change and it is up to us to keep up.
I asked nearly every individual interviewed for my book a variant of the same question: What works? What’s the secret to navigating social media? Have you figured it out? The answer was a resounding, “No, we have not figured it out nor will we — the challenge is new every day.”
