Shark Tank, the popular U.S. reality television series has been providing an excellent platform for aspiring entrepreneurs since its inception in 2009.

The ‘Sharks’ assess the pitch and based on that decide whether to invest in particular startup or not.

Conveying just the correct impact through a logo is extremely important as the entrepreneurs only have a short period of time to project the right image.

This means that a startup’s logo needs to convey a lot of things in a flash about the business.

Principles of Effective Logo Design

The logos targeted for Shark Tank should project an idea that the it is a serious business and is not there by an accident.

Therefore your logo shouldn’t look like it was created by an accident either.

And if you give it a thought you should judge your logo concepts by these 5 criteria:

Simple

Your logo should not contain too many graphic elements or create clutter and confusion in peoples’ minds.

Focus on one idea, if you lucky to convey more — that’s awesome, but don’t force it.

Everything that is not necessary should be removed — simplicity is the key.

Memorable

If your logo is simple, and distinctive enough — it can be easily remembered.

You logo should be able to just burn into peoples’ minds in an eye-blink.

If it does, then even the most abstract logo you can be infused with meaning through advertisement.

Versatile

A great logo should be able to scale to different sizes without losing the desired clarity or quality.

It should look equally good across different media (print and digital) and in different contexts.

Your logo must work in one color, and with other graphic elements to define your brand identity.

Appropriate

A great logo should be relevant to the business industry and the target audience.

It should resonate with the users the company wants to connect with.

It’s important to take a step back and define user personas, so that you know who you’re designing for.

Questions for designers

Based on these principles, I’ve reviewed all the logos of all the 95 companies that aired on ABC’s Shark Tank Season 9

Then I’ve picked 9 good logo designs and reached out to these companies with 3 simple questions:

  • How did the logo design process look like?
  • What was the biggest challenge when designing the logo?
  • Why did you arrive at this particular logo concept?

Below are the their answers:

1. Bravo

BRAVO is a fintech startup building disruptive payment technologies and a blockchain/cryptocurrency service.

How did the logo design process look like?

Initially, we considered a special shape to be incorporated into the logo but ended up playing with the letters that from our brand name BRAVO and use the AV letters with a tweak to denote give and receive and that could be used separately to symbolize the brand.

What was the biggest challenge when designing the logo?

The biggest challenge was probably making sure we could get the rights to it (trademark, copyrights).

Why did you arrive at this particular logo concept?

The entire team had consensus that the logo accomplished the simplicity and brand image we wanted to bring of fintech (modern), yet friendly, playful elements (AV special characters).
