The brand is a promise, but if you don’t trust the promise, then its of no value. Trustworthy promises make credible and powerful brands. They make strong market positions. Brands who own strong market positions — win.

People are willing to pay a premium price for a promise they believe in.

Think of Nike. The promise of Nike is winning.

If there was a pair of trainers, and exactly the same pair of trainers next to them — same color, same material, but one had a swoosh on it and one didn’t, and one said Nike and the other didn’t — you would pay $100 for the pair with the swoosh, and you wouldn’t pay $10 for the pair without.

That’s the value of the promise of winning.

It’s not just the logo neither a name, it’s because Nike spent billions of dollars investing in that logo and in that name meaning — winning.

By seeing all of that, we come to believe that Nike means winning.

It’s important to design how the brand looks, but its equally important give the brand a voice — how it speaks. You have to start thinking about your brand promise.

What kind of promise can you make to your customers?

Undifferentiated brands compete on price. Differentiated or charismatic brands are ones which the customer feels there is no replacement for.

I help startups grow, by helping them understand who their customers are, and talk to their customers in a genuine and relatable way.

I can’t guarantee you success, but I will give you the best shot at winning.
