Melancholy — ‘End Of An Era’ (Album)

While it may be easier to provide coverage for the same group of prevalent artists out of Boston, the natural act of music discovery always proves to be more of a thrill. Taking the time to check out a full album from a previously unknown group can be risky, but the good folks over at Sound Of Boston encouraged us to check out Melancholy’s recently released project End Of An Era and it proved to be a rewarding listening experience.

So much new hip-hop music is influenced by social media and what’s popping off in the clubs/on the radio. This 14-track collection is the furthest thing from trendy, instead taking a deep dive into an underground territory fueled by ominous sonic backdrops and fluid storytelling. Utilizing a variety of creatively chosen samples, the Mattapoisett-based band evokes a consistent level of reflection as the laid back undertones allow the listener to immerse themselves in the unique production and relatable, gloomy lyricism. You may need to be in a certain mood to fully appreciate the pensive atmosphere of End Of An Era, but there is no doubt Melancholy succeeds in their creation of an introverted, distinctive body of work and we look forward to keeping tabs on their future music.
