Have a Question for Trump Country?

In the 2016 election, roughly 220 counties became “Trump Flip” counties, having voted in the past for Barack Obama but flipping to become counties that Donald Trump won.

Around 551 counties were “Trump Surge” counties, ones where Trump improved 20 points or more on the margin Mitt Romney had during the 2012 election.

Whether counties that flipped party or counties that swung much more heavily in the GOP direction, these areas represent what we at Echelon have termed “Trump Country.”

While not everyone in these counties voted for Donald Trump, these areas geographically represent the communities that were persuaded most by Trump’s message or were largely responsible for handing Trump the White House. And for those seeking to understand the next four years of American politics, studying these areas is essential.

Starting this month, Echelon Insights will produce our monthly “Trump Country” survey of registered voters in these communities. And we want to invite our friends to be a part of this project, too. Our plan? Using landline, cell phone, and online methods, we will interview 500 registered voters in the “Trump flip” counties and 500 registered voters in the additional “Trump surge” counties. We will start each survey with a few baseline questions that we at Echelon think are interesting, but will also allow our clients and partners to ask these voters about the questions that matter to their issue or industry.
