  1. Dread Halls

Ever since it came out in 2013, Dreadhalls has been terrorizing its users as they try to escape a dark and scary castle. This rogue-like survivalist game excels at creating a terrifying atmosphere, which is one of its greatest selling points. Players have a limited arsenal of tools to pick from: their bravery, a faint light and stealth. The levels are procedurally generated so there is no repetition, making each attempt to escape just as terrifying a the first time. This title is not for the faint of heart!

2. Drop Dead: Dual Strike

This first person shooter is an action adventure story that spans over three chapters. Players are the last agent alive and have to slay rogue zombies in order to stop Dr. Monday and save the world from domination. New characters are added throughout the game like CIA operative Billy-Bob and his daughter Celia-Jane. Some zombie-killing mechanics include a high-tech visor, nifty gadgets and weapons designed to take out zombies specifically. Players can hack and slash at the zombies, throw axes, play with two weapons at once and play with their friends in multiplayer mode among other things!

3. Death Horizon — Reloaded

This game takes place in a scientific research facility called The Horizon. It’s a quiet place but perhaps…too quiet. A virus breaks out and in order to survive and save the world, players can use both hands and their brain. Players have to keep moving in order to stand a chance: keep shooting, pick up rounds, climb ladders, scale pipes, jump onto bars, climb ropes, search cabinets and throw everything at zombies to survive. Players can choose whatever weapons they want. This game has realistic bloody graphics and controllers work together to create combo moves like firing with both hands while hanging onto a rope and loading a shotgun. For a fast-paced “think fast” horror game, this is a great choice.

4. Affected: The Manor

This game might take the prize for jump-scares. This is a haunted walkthrough that solely exists to terrify its players. While there is an original haunted house walk-through option, players can also choose a Gauntlet speed run version where each player is ranked by their time and how much they screamed. Best scores are captured on a global leaderboard so there is competition. Another option is playing in Darkness mode where the player has to navigate the darker unlit parts of the manor with just a candle. The ambience is terrifying and inviting at the same time.

5. Layers of Fear VR

This psychedelic horror game pulls the player into a certain kind of insanity. The Victorian mansion’s layout is often changing, making it hard for the player to retrace their steps. Players dive into the perspective of an insane painter and uncover the secret to her madness. Over time, visions of fear and horror are revealed and the player has to piece together the final masterpiece before the painter loses her mind completely. The haunting environment is riddled with macabre art and twisted puzzles.

6. Lies Beneath

This single-player survival horror game is action-packed and takes place in the foggy and sleepy town of Slumber, Alaska. Mae, a returning college student has to fight to save her dad from the evil townspeople and creepy creatures that are slowly destroying the town. This game feels like an immersive comic book and has terrifying scenarios that reveal the secrets of Slumber and Mae’s seemingly unrelated past. The player has a full arsenal of weapons to fight these monsters but they’ll also have to use their brain to solve puzzles. A nice feature of this game is the ability to customize the difficulty level and comfort option so it’s accessible to players of all ranges.

7. Cosmodread

Players are trapped on a broken down spaceship off the grid that’s full of horrors and threats. The only way to survive is to safely find their way back to Earth. The environment is detailed and intense, creating a sense of panic and urgency in the procedurally generated layouts. Explore random rooms, corridors, items and threats as each intense situation presents itself. Each door holds a surprise that challenges the players survival. Players can use their own hands to interact with the dimly lit environment like open doors, rummage through lockers and collect items they need. They can also fight by shooting at enemies but the catch is that ammo is limited.

8. Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul

It wouldn’t be a paranormal thriller if the flashlight didn’t work properly, would it? The player explores a home buried in the woods and discover they are not alone. There are clues that uncover a terrifying mystery of what has happened in the house as the player’s life is in danger. This game is broken up into different player modes: one with instructions and supported guidance and one that’s entirely immersive that uses minimum Room Scale and Immersive Movement Role-play system (IMRS). Once the tutorial is over, the player is entirely on their own and left to survive using their own wits and strengths.

9. Exorcist: Legion VR

If there ever was a franchise that would be perfect for VR, it’s The Exorcist. There are five connected stories that have different demons, exorcism tools, hidden artifacts and environments. Players dive deep into the heart of the supernatural and learn how to perform expert exorcisms. The caveat is players will discover horrifying secrets along the way that lead to an extraordinary confrontation with their deepest fears. Who knew exorcists were in such high demand?

10. Blair Witch

Although The Exorcist is the perfect franchise for a VR game, Blair Witch comes pretty darn close. The documentary-style horror film terrified a whole generation and changed the way they thought of camping and the woods. The psychological horror game follows a story based on the movie’s lore. The player is a former police officer with a troubled past that joins the search for a missing child in the black Hills Forest. An ominous force complicates the search and puts the officer, Ellie, on edge. Lucky for her, she has a K9 companion that supports the player in navigating the scenes by being eyes, ears and a nose to inform the player. There are gesture commands, bullet mechanics, hand-based interactions with the dog and an expertly laid out forest environment.
