5 More Movies that Got Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Right

Two years ago, we’ve put together a list of our top 10 favorite movies that not only have a great plot, but also feature augmented reality and virtual reality in their stories and include great examples of use cases for 3D asset management in AR/VR (by order of release). The echo3D team invites you to take advantage of the changing seasons by watching even more movies that incorporate AR/VR in their plots!

1. The Thirteenth Floor | 1999 | Sci-fi/Thriller | 1h 40m

On the thirteenth floor of a corporate tower, a team of scientists have created a portal to simulated VR universe, as they cross the boundaries of reality. The plot thickens when one scientist running the VR simulation becomes the primary suspect, when his colleague and mentor is murdered. For fans of thriller, suspense, and technology, look no further —just go up to “The Thirteenth Floor.”

2. The Call Up | 2016 | Sci-fi/Action | 1h 30m

A group of gamers are invited to try an innovated in-person VR experience but things take a sinister turn when it turns out that when you die in the game, you also die in real life. Don’t mind the review — this movie offers a great example of the applicability of VR and full body haptic suits for gaming.

3. 2047 Virtual Revolution | 2016 | Sci-fi | 1h 32m

Set in a future where most people (known as the “connected”) spend all their time online in virtual worlds, an agent working for one of the companies behind these VR experiences is tracking down insurgents named the “Necromancers” who are threatening the system. This independent cyberpunk film allows us to envision a world where VR experiences have overtaken our time in the real worlds.

4. Ready Player One | 2018 | Sci-fi/Action | 2h 20m

Directed by Steven Spielberg, this cinematic adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel by the same name is simply the perfect mix of action, plot twists, and, of course, VR technology! A must watch if you like VR and video games. Ready Player One invites the viewer to join a series of adventures in a fully VR world that transcends the screen.

5. Avengers: Endgame | 2019| Action/Sci-fi | 3h 2m

We love you 3000! Watch this epic conclusion to Marvel’s Infinity Saga — and, in particular, how Iron Man and the rest of the Avengers use AR technology on their suits and in order to build their own infinity gauntlet, as they attempt to save the world.
