RED CARPET MONITOR: “Black Panther” makes history as Best Picture nominee

“Black Panther” has made history, becoming the first Marvel Universe film to land a nomination for Best Picture, despite skeptics (like me) that it would manage to do so, no matter how deserving it was (and is).

There were a number of major surprises with the announcement of the nominees for the 2019 Academy Awards this morning, starting with the inclusion of Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the Best Picture race, apparently costing critical darling “If Beale Street Could Talk” its expected spot in the lineup, while Bradley Cooper was shut out of the Best Director race for “A Star Is Born”, Ethan Hawke nowhere to be seen in the Best Actor race for his mulitiple critics-award winning role in “First Reformed” and Timothee Chalamet not among the supporting actor nominees despite being a frontrunner for “Beautiful Boy”. And Mister Rogers won’t be getting an Oscar either; the critically adored “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” was shut out of the Best Documentary category. And no female directors were nominated for Best Director, either, while critically acclaimed, award-winning darling “Roma” makes history as the first TV MOVIE to be nominated for Best Picture…Netflix should NOT be in the Oscar race PERIOD — theatrical qualifying run or not. Just my two cents, your mileage may vary. And watch for the Woketopia crowd to intensify their already-insanely vicious smear campaign against heartwarming Golden Globe-winning frontrunner “Green Book” . which also landed a Best Picture nomination, while that crowd’s choice, the aforementioned “Beale Street” did not.

Here’s the full list of nominees: The Academy Awards will air live on Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on ABC.
