Purpose and Importance

  • Used to discuss the availability of supervision in the area of research.
  • Important for formal application and outlining the research plan.

Length of the Proposal

  • Should be between 2,000–3,500 words or 4–7 pages long.

Key Components of the Proposal

  • Title of the research.
  • Background and rationale, including the significance of the research.
  • Clear research question(s) with an explanation of the problems and issues to be explored.
  • Research methodology outlining the approach and techniques to be used.
  • Plan of work & time schedule, detailing stages and timelines for the research and thesis writing.
  • Bibliography listing the references.

Timeframe for Completion

  • Full-time study: Research to be completed within three years, with the fourth year for writing up.
  • Part-time study: Research to be completed within six years, with writing up by the eighth year.
