As my first post to Medium I want to share a map I’ve made as a tribute to Game of Thrones. It includes our vision of how Westeros would look like had it has energy resources.

I’ve spent one day of analyzing the existing maps of Westerоs and how energy resources are located on our planet. Design took me a day of extra after work hours.

Here is the result:

ENERGY MAP OF WESTEROS

The richest house of Tyrell has the best location on the map. Their landscape and mild climate allow them to have wind power, coal mines, solar power, hydroelectric dams. Being connected to the other houses, they are able to sell all that energy to the less fortunate houses. No wonder their army was strong. But something tells us that very soon, the energy balance will be changed towards the Lannisters family 😉

Tyrell’s energy resources

The Lannisters have all the gold, yes. They also have gas, coal and tide power. Even if they have never had gold mines, they still would be very powerful. We absolutely do not understand where they have wasted all of their money.

Lannister’s energy resources

The Starks. Although it’s a pretty cold part of the land, Winterfell has everything to be energy independent: hydropower, coal and wind power. Having a lot of lands full of opportunities, they are a pretty strong family in the North. The winter is coming with long nights and strong winds. We predict that a large number of wind stations in Winterfell will change the energy balance of Westeros.

Stark’s energy resources

When it comes to the Baratheons, combining them all would give them the money and power they have never had. Having the main port of King’s Landing (that now belongs to the Lannisters) would allow them to trade for fossil fuels from around the world. Stannis tried to achieve greatness for his house with quite unpopular actions. Who would knows what could happen if the energy of the red woman was directed in the right direction?

Baratheon’s energy resources

The Martells’ geolocation is similar to what we have in the Middle East, so they would have oil and gas. Several generations ago, Martells had an energy crisis because Westeros has started to import oil from Essos. Nowaday, Martell is the biggest exporter of alternative energy from solar and tide to other Westeros families.

House Arryn is independent and separated by all the means. Surrounded with mountains, Arryn has big coal mines in its valleys and wind power on the hills. Since coal is losing its positions, Arryn has decided “to help its cousin”. But we all know what is it about.

Arryn’s energy resources

Lucky are those who will receive the land of the once strong house of Tully. Three rivers and green fields surrounding Riverrun provide this castle with enough of energy to use it and sell.

Tully’s energy resources

On the other hand, take a look at the Greyjoys. They only depend on wave power and on wind power. That is a lot of energy that they cannot sell, another bummer for this house. Nowadays, they have a very hard situation to deal with due to Cersei’s plan to leave the Westeros and Essos climate agreement. They simply can drown. But what is dead may never die indeed.

Rumor has it, the Targaryens have a secret weapon — dragons. Some older people say that the Targaryens have discovered how to use the thermonuclear reaction inside the dragons for electricity production. This was the main reason why the Targaryens originally held the throne.
