Alexander Tochilovsky was born in Odessa, USSR, and emigrated
to the United States in 1989. He studied at the Cooper Union University
in New York where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and he received his Master of Fine Arts in Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan). Between his degrees, he also worked at the Center for Design and Typography at the Cooper Union for four years before teaching as associate professor in May 2007. In 2010, he was named Curator of the Herb Lubalin Center of Design and Typography, he also co-founded
the postgraduate certificate program Type@Cooper where he teaches the history of typeface design.
During our trip we had the opportunity to visit the Herb Lubalin Center
and mostly to meet Alexander. He took the time the show us a beautiful selection of iconic pieces he curated such as the First Edition of the New York City Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual by Massimo Vignelli
and also a big selection of popular works of Herb Luballin such as Eros Magazines, Fact Magazine… He was very enthusiastic about sharing with us his knowledge and it was very exciting for us to listen to him as well. He gave us good advices about how to experience creative process, how to be curious and look at things differently.
