Miguel Reyes interview

MIGUEL Reyes was born in 1984. He is a type designer and a former graphic designer from Mexico. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Type Design at the School of Design in Mexico after working in Barcelona and Mexico City. He began working with Commercial Type in 2013, where he was in charge of the design of Canela, Caponi, Duplicate Ionic, Gabriello, Marian Text and Sanomat Sans fonts.

During the ECV New York Workshop 2017, we had the chance to meet him at the Type Directors Club. He talked to us about the Duplicate Ionic font he designed in 2013, inspired by the traditional Clarendon and the modernity of Antique Olive. He also designed Canela in 2016 which is an interpretation of Caslon.

The workshop consisted in practicing brush lettering. Miguel showed us some promotional posters he designed, and demonstrated how to draw some letters. We tried to reproduce the examples by first drawing diagonals as a guide. Miguel was very nice and patient when he came to see each of us to help and advise us.
