Lynne Yun, Type Designer at Monotype

While we were unfamiliar with Lynne’s work prior to her talk, it did not take long for us to find ourselves completely mesmerized by her energy. Was there anything this woman hadn’t tried or done?

Of course, there was a lot of beautiful lettering and flourishing, some killer type work from her current job at Monotype, but also tales of spectacular failure, like the time she designed the 8 for Apple’s iOS 8 release and the Internet went bonkers over it. And if we’re honest, aren’t those tales the ones we crave hearing ? More than seeing beautiful projects and images ? It’s so reassuring to hear someone so blatantly successful talking about the times where they really, really messed up. Not because failure is fun, but because you can and will recover from it. So, I think she gave the right message to a bunch of twenty-somethings about the graduate, with no definite plan ahead of them.

She gave such a compelling talk that we could only be inspired for the workshop that followed. Many of us where surprised to see what came out that day, where we loosely followed her instructions and let the ink and our minds run freely.
