In 2018 Gary Dickenson and his family moved to Latvia to his wife’s family’s smallholding and decided to make a go of it, living ‘the good life’ working towards self sufficiency.

Almost overnight it required a completely different skillset and mindset but somehow it worked, swapping a desk for a table saw, a pen for a spade.

Find out how the family survived a change of country, language, pace and culture.

Here are Gary’s eight tips for living somewhere, nowhere:
1. Learn how to learn everything from YouTube
2. Apply the wisdom filter — always ask “why?” before doing anything.
3. Learn to live on Apollo13 — re-learn to be reactive.
4. Change your heart AND your mind.
5. Become part of the barter economy.
6. Build trust — you need your neighbours.
7. Do crazy stuff — even when it doesn’t get through the wisdon filter.
8. Share your wisdom.
