Leadership isn’t a popularity contest

What is right isn’t always popular, and what is popular isn’t always right.

I recently read a great article on Jerry West’s move to the Clippers’ front office, and the hard decisions he recommended that owner Steve Ballmer make. Business is business, whether it is basketball or B2B software, and his statement about popularity vs doing the right thing rings true in my world, as well as his. Kudos, Mr. West.

Related, but for another time, isn’t his feeling of “wanting to be wanted” the deepest yearning of all of us? He is just more real (and self-aware) than most.
