The COP climate summits are supposed to be the world’s stage for fighting climate change. COP29, like its predecessors, will host a parade of pledges, lofty targets, and a rehashed commitment to the Paris Agreement’s goals. But let’s be honest: in the face of skyrocketing energy demands, these talks are little more than empty rituals.

While delegates in Azerbaijan congratulate each other on yet another unenforceable resolution, global energy use is on a runaway trajectory that shreds any hope of meeting climate targets. With demand driven by the unchecked AI boom, relentless urban expansion, and our unrepentant thirst for “progress,” the contradictions couldn’t be more glaring. The world is racing toward resource exhaustion and climate catastrophe, and COP29’s failure to confront this reality is damning proof that we’re on a fast track to collapse.
