With students starting back at college, I thought a COVID safety refresher was in order
Of course, given how polarizing COVID-19 is, I couldn’t simply get away with producing a conventional “what to do” video!
Over the next few weeks, colleges will see a massive influx of students onto campuses and into dorms. I’m looking forward to being able to interact with students in person again, and to soak up the vibe of a buzzing campus.
At the same time, the next few months are going to be challenging as the Delta variant of COVID-19 sweeps the country. And to make things harder, many campuses are facing legal blocks to them requiring the types of safety measures that are needed to curb the virus’ spread.
This is certainly the case in Arizona where I teach. Here, the Governor has signed an Executive Order that prevents us from conducting mandatory testing, requiring vaccines, or insisting that students and others wear masks around others.
Writing as a public health expert who works on risk, it blows my mind that some of the most important tools for stopping the spread of the virus are being denied us. However, at least we can still remind our students that acting responsibly toward others is the best way of keeping themselves safe and healthy.
Of course, it’s easy to forget to do the right thing when it comes to COVID — especially when unsafe behavior is being modeled so blatantly by others. So I thought a quick refresher was in order:
Because coronavirus has become so politicized and wrapped up in conspiracy theories (to the extent that there are groups actively looking to prevent informed advice getting to people), I took a somewhat unusual approach to this … with a COVID-19 safety refresher that is absolutely not about COVID!
I hope you enjoy the video. But even more, I hope that you pass it on to others, and heed the advice!
