(4/4 of) American Hookup by Lisa Wade
Chapter 9:
- is the alarmingly high rate of sexual assault on college campuses the result of hookup culture?
- “The feminist legal scholar Catharine MacKinnon once argued that rape was not prohibited, but regulated.” (pg. 206 [Kindle edition])
- “In these environments, true predators thrive. For the small percentage of men who are inclined to be sexually aggressive, hookup culture is camouflage. (pg. 213 [Kindle edition])
Chapter 10:
- open communication and dating are foreign to college students because hookup culture teaches them that these things are wrong/silly/inferior
- hooking up can lead to relationships that are functional and healthy
Conclusion:
- “Thanks to these stereotypes, when men pursue sex on campus today it is interpreted as a sign of a healthy, red-blooded masculinity, but we still don’t acknowledge a healthy, red-blooded femininity. When women of color are sexual, it’s seen as a racial trait; when poor and working-class women are sexual, it’s read as “trashy”; and when middle-class white women are sexual, it’s interpreted, all too often, as just a proxy for relational yearning.” (pg. 242 [Kindle edition])
- As student affairs professionals, we have to be comfortable discussing hookup culture and all its implications. Hookup culture isn’t going away. We have a responsibility to our students to be able to support them as they navigate hookup culture.
