Arguments aren’t always fights. Discover ten useful strategies for keeping cool, practicing attentive listening, and encouraging effective communication even in trying circumstances.
Many times, the word "argument" conjures up images of elevated voices and a desire to "win." Although I think of myself as a decent communicator, I often withdraw from difficult situations. Still, as the author of this article counsels, "keep it straightforward and unambiguous. Be quick but not hurried."
I now see that there is plenty to benefit both before and during any argument. These ten golden rules help me now to keep in mind every day conflicts in my life.
1. Take long breaths:
Stop and inhale a few deep breaths when you sense your voice rising or your pulse rate racing. This will enable you to control your feelings and enable a more deliberate response.
2. Listen actively:
Though you disagree with it, concentrate on knowing the other person's point of view. Note their body language, tone, and speech.
