Fellows
Goal | We aim to convene a group of approximately 10–12 students who will form a tight knit and passionate community. We are aiming not just to discuss education and to write articles, but also to foster relationships between members of the cohort, to spark ideas for projects and start ups, and to network with big names in the education sphere.
When | The cohort will run for the duration of the semester/summer, for 14 weeks in Winter and Spring, and 10 weeks in Summer:
Winter Cohort: September — December
Spring Cohort: January — April
Summer Cohort: May — August (May 29th to August 4th 2017)
Who are we looking for? | Writers, tinkerers, artists, activists, radicals, conservatives, young and old, from across the world — we want students questioning where higher education is and where it’s going. You must:
- Be pursuing a postsecondary degree or certificate with an accredited college or university (reach out if you’re an exception to this definition of “student”).
- Be aged between 17 and 25.
- Be comfortable speaking, comprehending, reading and writing in English, especially in live online meetings.
- Have a clearly demonstrated interest in journalism, digital storytelling, writing, or multimedia presentations.
- Have a clearly demonstrated interest in education.
- Commit to participating in weekly digital meetups.
Why should you participate?
- Gain access to education’s top thinkers and doers through intimate small group discussions.
- Learn about trends and new ideas in higher education.
- Build relationships with peers who are also interested in driving change in education.
- Develop and polish your writing and/or presentation skills.
- Share your stories with a broad audience of faculty, administrators and Edtech leaders through the EdSurge Independent platform and other EdSurge channels.
- Some examples of our previous guest speakers include: the Founding Dean of Minerva Schools at KGI, the Senior Program Officer for Postsecondary Success at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Senior Policy Advisor at U.S. Department of Education, and many others.
- At the end of the cohort, you will have the opportunity to apply for a paid internship with EdSurge as a cohort leader for the following two semesters.
Cohort Expectations | Each participant will be responsible for two types of contributions:
Cohort Meetings | 1 every week
- We meet together as a group (using Zoom or Google Hangouts) for one hour each week to discuss a different topic of interest in education.
- Our previous discussions have ranged from ‘Revolution in Higher Ed’, to ‘Data in Education’, to ‘Democratic and Alternative Schooling’.
- There will also be 2–4 Guest Speaker Sessions over the course of each cohort.
- It is expected that every student attend every meeting, unless there are significant extenuating circumstances.
Medium Posts | 1 every month (or every 3 weeks in Summer), (3 total)
- These contributions will either be a 500–1500 word opinion-style reflection or an equivalent multi-media experience of your choice. You could create a video, a podcast, a cartoon, or any type of experience that can be published (or linked to) on Medium.
- We will offer some broad topics for reflection, creating a body of pieces on issues surrounding education, like “Computer Vision in Education — What, How, and Why?”, “The Impending Human Capital Revolution”, and “Alternative Credentialing and the Graduate Skills-Gap”.

What you’ll hear back from us | We will let you know if you have been selected by May 11th. Note that in our selection, we will consider the makeup of the cohort, as we want to create a community of people from many different backgrounds and institutional affiliations.
