If you are worried about your child spending much time in board games, then you must give it a second thought as there are some board games that are not just for fun; they teach them something. In fact, board games are not just for play, they teach your kids some useful skills like learning new words, maths and strategy. Above all, they are fun and your kids love it! 1. Scrabble: Perhaps, the best board game that will help your kids to improve stock of words and vocabulary is Scrabble. This classic game is a favorite for millions and one needs to use 7 tiles to create a meaningful word that should be genuine enough to outscore the other player. Designed by Alfred Mosher Butts in 1938 and published by James Brunot, the game also offers an official scrabble player’s dictionary to avoid any debates regarding the existence of any word created while playing. Players can refer to any other dictionary for verification as well.

2. Sudoku: Originally known as ‘Number Place’, the game requires you to use logic and place all the digits from 1 to 9 in such a way that each of the column, row and each of the boxes forming the grids have all of the digits without repeating. The puzzle comes with a partially completed grid and the rest is needed to be completed by players. This logic-based game became an instant hit in 2005 sometime after its first popularity by Nikoli, a Japanese puzzle company in the year 1986.

3. Monopoly: The American originated game came into being through the hands of Parker Brothers in 1934, although its origin is traced back to the year 1903 with Elizabeth Phillips developing a game known as The Landlord’s Game. Play with your kids and help them learn finance management as they proceed with the game, moving around the board buying properties and collecting rent from other players who end up in that property. Players going bankrupt are out of the game.

4. Chess: Perhaps, one of the best board games to improve strategic skills, Chess is highly popular in all ages, played by millions all over the world. The game is played on a chessboard which is a checkered board with 64 squares that are arranged in an eight-by-eight framework. Each of the two player have to deal with their own 16 pieces- one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. Each of the six type of piece moves in a distinct pattern and to move these pieces, the players need to have good tactics and strategic skills.

5. Risk: Another very popular strategy game, Risk was founded by Albert Lamorisse, a French film director and released as La Conquete du Monde (‘The Conquest of the World’) in the year 1957 in France. Produced by Parker Brothers, the game can be played by two to six players, on a board that looks like a political map of Earth, divided into six continents with each continent having forty-two territories. The main target of the player is “to occupy every territory on the board and in so doing, eliminate all the other players.” Players do also have armies to get hold of territories from other players and everything is decided by the roll of a dice.
