New Courses Build Social, Emotional and Cognitive Behavioral Skills

Today EVERFI, Inc., the nation’s leading education technology innovator used in 1 in 7 public schools nationwide, deepened its commitment to providing students with critical social, emotional, and behavioral skills by announcing the release of three new interactive digital courses designed to empower students in their development by addressing the whole child.

“At EVERFI we are motivated to ensure every child receives the support they need to learn critical life skills which are often overlooked in the traditional academic curriculum,” said Jon Chapman, EVERFI Co-Founder and President of Global Partnerships. “We couldn’t be more excited to unveil these new courses to empower students with the knowledge and tools to develop lifelong wellness.”

EVERFI has already invested in Social Emotional Learning (SEL) education with the 2016 launch of Character Playbook in partnership with the United Way Worldwide and NFL. To date, more than 250,000 students have taken this digital course focused on helping student maintain healthy relationships.

According to EVERFI analysis of Character Playbook data, students that initially showed deficiencies in managing & building healthy relationships showed an average of a 21 percent increase in positive attitudes about relationships after taking the digital course. Additionally, these students indicated a 17 percent increase in preparedness to deal with conflicts and communication in a healthy way.

EVERFI’s new courses, Mental Wellness Basics, Honor Code, and The Compassion Project each take a unique focus to help students enhance the well-being of themselves and others.

Mental Wellness Basics

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 children between the ages of 13–18 has or will have a serious mental illness. Mental Wellness Basics is a comprehensive, digital program aimed to help middle and high school educators foster mental wellness in their classrooms and equip students with lifelong mental wellness skills. The classroom-ready lessons cover topics such as the science behind mental health, overcoming the stigma of mental health disorders, establishing effective coping strategies, and more.

Honor Code

Nearly 1 in 4 students between 12–18 report being bullied according to the National Center for Education Statistics. In partnership with the Navy Seal Foundation, Honor Code leverages themes from the Navy SEALs ethos to empower students to create change, whether they’re engaging in bullying, on the receiving end of it, or witnessing it in their school. The course helps develop students as leaders and outstanding citizens when faced confronted with challenges.

The Compassion Project

Students exposed to SEL in school continue to do better than their peers on a number of indicators: positive social behaviors and attitudes, skills such as empathy and teamwork, and academic achievement, according to a 2017 meta-analysis conducted by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Yet with so much emphasis placed on core subjects such as math and science, SEL skills are often overlooked. EVERFI is proud to launch The Compassion Project to ensure that every primary school student in the US understands what compassion is and how to practice it in their lives.
