Education and community as sacred

What is more sacred to American education than the neighborhood school?

Imagine Norman Rockwell etching this scene from his Stockbridge studio: young students, bundled for the Berkshire snow, with the crossing guard, headed for school.

Much like a school bell, the red apple, and the yellow bus, most of us have a cherished memory of the neighborhood school.

But what if that neighborhood school does not supply the needs of the student or the community? Let’s say a student with an affinity for music has a school with a decimated music program.

Or worse yet: no music program.

Besides the expensive option of a private school, or the possibility of a charter school, which may or may not be a great option, what options do parents and children have?
