T is for technology, which these days commonly appears in educational discourse as part of STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Given that science and mathematics were already a valued and mainstream part of the curriculum, it is perhaps the technology and engineering elements that have most benefitted from this trend, and many high schools now having technology departments. This can extend to include sub-disciplines such as graphic communication, design, technical drawing, computer engineering, and so on.

Technology is also clearly a key part of a teacher’s toolkit too, though — from Powerpoint to iPads. Indeed, technology education is more relevant than ever.

At the same time, educators might want to consider whether a focus on STEM is pushing out other valuable areas such as social science and the creative arts, and perhaps links to a capitalist agenda, as discussed here by Renea Baek Goddard.
