There are tons of commercially available materials in the market for teachers and special educators. Some of these materials meet your needs while others can be…let’s just say that they are not an effective use of school or personal resources.

The field of speech and language therapy is no different. Some materials can meet multiple needs for working in small groups while others deliver “cute” content that is not necessarily at the level of what certain students need.

For students with any learning challenge, it is the responsibility of the teacher or therapist to make the learning objective clear and able to be learned. This can mean many things, from adding visual supports to reducing the number of questions on a test (but maintaining the learning targets; i.e., at least one question for each topic that was covered).

When we consider commercially available materials, there is of course a limiting factor preset with the materials. Not every author or developer can consider…
