We as humans all have this one specific character trait. Procrastination. There’s a saying that I’m sure everyone knows. “Procrastination at it’s finest.” I follow by this saying a lot because we all love to procrastinate. As much as we all hate it, it’s there. We tend to put aside all work to the side and do it all last minute. This is very unhealthy and a wasteful of time. Let’s explore the different ways we can avoid procrastinating.

In the book, “Successful time management, A self teaching guide,” by Jack D. Ferner, he states a three alternatives to avoid procrastinating.

  • “Make a commitment to someone else”
  • “Arrange your environment to make it easier to keep going once you get started”
  • “Give yourself rewards along the way”

As the first alternative, it’s always good to make a commitment to someone else. As Ferner explains in the book, it’s good to promise someone to do something because, you can’t back out of promise. Telling a partner, friend peer that you’ll do something can help manage time effectively because you can you have to do it afterwards. This can lead to getting work done.

In the second alternative, we all need that one place where can peacefully get work done. It may be a cafe, your room, a park or whatever place you find comfortable doing your work and getting it done. Finding that one nice environment allows us to get into the mind of what you’re doing once you’re settled and getting in the material. It can help our minds focus on what is needed to be accomplished.

Lastly, it’s always good to incentivize ourself. This can help ourselves get more work done and commit toward a goal that you’re working on. Telling yourself that if you getting something done while having a reward after helps us individual how to manage time and get work done by the time we need it to be done. In this case we can get majority of what is needed to be done complete and feel good about ourselves.

Finding different ways to no procrastinate is a hard skill that everyone needs to improve on. But once you find different alternatives to not procrastinate, you basically have the foundation of time management. They both go hand to hand. Knowing how to not procrastinate helps getting work done and helps you manage time efficiently so no time is wasted on other things. Procrastinating is the key essence to time management.
