After a long week at work, the last thing you want to do on a Friday night is go to class, right?

I thought that at first, but there is something about our group on entrepreneurs, that made it a fun way to kick off the weekend.

Our group usually sits around a large conference table, but tonight I walked in to a more informal semicircle of chairs. Our speaker, Kit Irwin, listened intently to each pitch, and was able to give us helpful critiques to make our pitches stand out. Some of us learned that we need to shorten up our pitch, and others (like myself) learned that our pitches don’t effectively describe what we do.

After listening to Kit give her presentation I put together a Top 5 list of public speaking skills:

  1. Take a deep breath before you begin speaking
  2. Stand tall, and confident
  3. Use the tone and volume of your voice to get your point across
  4. Hand gestures can be helpful in conveying emotion
  5. Practice your speaking skills with a simple exercise! Stand in front of a mirror and count to 20, using different emotions, and tones of voice.

Most importantly just let your passion shine through. Remind yourself why you created this company in the first place, and people will listen!
