Well my nuts, bolts, cogs, and brain synapses were smoking after this session — whhhhooo- weee!

It all started out just fine — humor — smiling faces — financial encouragement. It ended with sweat on brows, belly aches, and the worst case scenarios swirling in our brains. This being dramatically said I am grateful that it was presented, it was useful, necessary, and something every new entrepreneur needs to hear.

Matt Cronin of Boardwalk Business Group presented the first hour on bookkeeping and accounting for small business. It was made clear with light humor and jovial spirit the definitions of a balance sheet, income statement, chart of accounts, ledger, burn rate, and other groovy financial lingo. Matt pulled up a real-time look at a mock Quickbooks account online and played around with it over the projector making my personal intimidation of book keeping dwindle. I confess that I have been in business for just over six months now and have been avoiding getting financially organized but now not so much. I didn’t realize how easy you could personalize the program to your business and the simplicity of a dashboard made it feel familiar and gave me confidence that this is something very doable, even for a non-techie kinda gal like myself. Matt encouraged us to “Move forward — you’ll learn lessons along the way and it’s O.K. to put things in place as you go along.” — this is exactly what I needed to hear!

Honestly, our second hour was not so pleasant, but like I said, something every person who wants to take on the role of entrepreneur will need to know. Now, I must state for the record that the unpleasantness of the talk was no fault of E for All or our presenter — Adam Trivilino, from Rogers and Gray Insurance, it was just the subject matter — Insurance. Myself, having a mobile business, insurance is my biggest monthly expense — it’s a real bummer. But got to have it, and got to know which kind to have and why. This is what was went over in detail: commercial general liability, property coverage, commercial inland marine, worker’s comp, professional liability, commercial auto, data breach, and EPLI. My head was spinning ,there were some white faces in the room, and comments like “My stomach hurts.” after talk of all the lovely suing scenarios. At the end of it all we kept our chins up, took deep breath, and got out of there!
