On Sunday, Vitrus.pro, defeated OpTic Gaming at the ESL One’s Dota 2 Major final, the first ever to be held in the UK. They now proceed directly to the International, the most prestigious tournament hosted by Valve to be held in Rogers Arena, Vancouver, Canada. Virtus.Pro were the tournament favorites and are arguably the best esports team in the world, won the $500,000 prize in a comprehensive 3–0 victory.

The first game was a walkover for Virtus, with the Russian and Ukranian team sweeping three cores without any deaths. OpTiC fought back in the second game but were eventually defeated after the longest game in the tournament. In the third, Virtus returned to dominance and sealed the victory in less than 20 minutes.

This win is Virtus’ third ESL One Victory and their fourth Major of the season.

Vladimir ‘No[on]e’ Mineko won the MVP award, “Actually, I played bad.” He said, “So I don’t think so. I think my teammates should get this more than me”

Lesser known Brazilian team Pain Gaming beat Fnatic 2–1 in the third place play off. Big names Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses had already been eliminated in the group stages.

The final was available to watch for free in English on ESL One website or ESL Facebook Stream. Twitch streams were available in Russian, Polish, Thai, Spanish, Filipino and Vietnamese.

In the UK, the final was covered by the BBC in an easy to follow format for newcomers to Dota 2. The BBC’s coverage of esports in the UK is still evolving and they realise the need for esports to be accessible to the casual gamer.

“With over 25m gamers in the UK, it’s fantastic to have the BBC supporting ESL One Birmingham’ said James Dean, MD of ESL UK. ‘BBC Three will be covering the finals at a much more accessible level so viewers without in-depth knowledge of Dota 2 can still enjoy the action and learn what’s going on.’

Congratulations to Virtus.pro on this dramatic victory.
