Updates from Startups Attended The Business Booster 2021

The Business Booster by EIT InnoEnergy took place in Berlin on 3–4 November 2021 with an attendance of +150 sustainable energy portfolio companies of EIT InnoEnergy and 1,200 industry experts, policymakers, investors, and academics.

The Business Booster, or TBB as it’s widely known, is EIT InnoEnergy’s annual international networking event — a two-day showcase of 150+ sustainable energy technologies under one roof. Each year the event rotates among European capital cities, which have included Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Paris.

instagrid Raises One of the Biggest Cleantech Funding Rounds, $33M, to Advance International Expansion:


The Ludwigsburg-based provider of clean mobile battery systems and EIT InnoEnergy portfolio company instagrid has raised $33 million in its series B. The funding will be used to accelerate instagrid’s international expansion.

Their technology replaces environmentally harmful combustion engines, such as those predominantly used today for portable power, e.g., in the construction sector or for events.

The B-series financing round was led by the US-based Energy Impact Partners, EIP, while all of our existing investors participated in the financing round as well, including SET Ventures, Segnalita Ventures, blueworld.group, Hightech Gründerfonds and Wille Finance AG.

Galp and Northvolt Establish Joint Venture ‘Aurora’ to Develop a Lithium Conversion Facility:


Galp and EIT InnoEnergy portfolio company Northvolt set up a joint venture ‘Aurora’ to develop opportunities related to the fast-growing battery value chain.

The joint venture is engaged in the development of Europe’s largest and most sustainable lithium conversion plant, to be located in Portugal, with an annual production capacity of up to 35,000 tons of lithium hydroxide and a start of commercial operations in 2026.

The project is aligned with the Portuguese and European industrialization efforts related to the energy transition and is a milestone in the development of a European battery value chain.

The joint venture will also continue to explore other business opportunities along the value chain and is committed to adopting the most environmentally sound approaches throughout all activities.

Micro mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) pioneer ACTON has acquired DUCKT, a leading European provider of docking and charging infrastructure solutions for electric micro-mobility vehicles.

By merging these with its best-in-class portfolio of electric vehicles and IoT software, ACTON can deliver a fully integrated turnkey offering that allows cities, companies, and operators across the globe to deploy micro-mobility solutions seamlessly at a mass scale.

REYM Rotterdam and C-Green Launch Unique Collaboration to Reduce Climate Impact from Industrial Wet Waste:


Swedish clean-tech and EIT InnoEnergy portfolio company C-Green and REYM, the leading Dutch industrial cleaning and waste management company, are launching a unique collaboration to reduce the climate impact and increase the circularity of industrial wet waste — so-called sludge.

REYM and C-Green will explore the feasibility of building a C-Green OxyPower HTC™ plant for converting sludge into biofuel at REYM’s facility in Rotterdam. In addition to providing substantial climate benefits, this cutting-edge technology will also increase REYM’s operational activities.

French Start-up Athena will Launch a Demonstrator in 2022 to Produce Hydrogen, Using Wastewater and Effluents from Agri-food Factories:


EIT InnoEnergy portfolio company Athena has developed a method to produce hydrogen from bacteria fed with wastewater from food plants since 2020.

In 2022, a mobile demonstrator of 1m3 will operate directly in different agri-food factories to produce hydrogen in a totally decarbonized, renewable, and non-disposable way, using wastewater and organic effluents from these factories.

A first industrial site will be constructed by the end of 2023, that will produce hydrogen with a target of 40 tons per year, which could be increased to 120 tons.

Aeinnova and VoltStorage Among the 50 Most Promising Startups in the EIC ScalingUp 50 Listing:


EIT InnoEnergy portfolio companies Aeinnova and VoltStorage were both selected as some of the most promising sustainability startups within the EIC ScalingUp project.

Out of the 3000 candidates, only 50 of the most promising were selected by the Selection Committee composed of 30 qualified individuals from all over Europe. Launched in 2021, EIC ScalingUp is financed by the European Commission to power European deep tech startups that are raising in Series B or C.
