🎂 Happy Birthday, ChatGPT!

One year ago, OpenAI released ChatGPT to the world and became the fastest-growing product, taking everyone by surprise, including its maker.

ChatGPT brought the latest AI technology into the hands of anyone and presented a simple text box where any question or idea can be explored. One year later, we are still discovering new usages in various contexts- which is unique. We can’t think of any other invention where we discovered new capabilities after it was released. In retrospect, this is, I think, what’s most unique about ChatGPT.

For AI professionals like us, the availability of the APIs and the open-source models, such as the Llama variants, were more disruptive than ChatGPT itself — but ChatGPT made people realize that AI can be a powerful tool and boost productivity in many different contexts and it helps educate the market.

November 30th, 2022, will be a date to remember in AI history. Happy birthday, ChatGPT, it must be hard to age at an exponential rate!

Of course, I asked ChatGPT to imagine its own birthday cake

🇨🇳 Shanghai tour

November 22nd, I finally had the opportunity to visit Shanghai after a four-year COVID hiatus, completing my 2023 tour of Ekohe’s offices. Not exactly complete — I should have visited Lisbon to be 100% complete– hopefully next year!

Missed this incredible view from the Ekohe Shanghai office!

It was quite a unique feeling to walk back into the office tower, take the elevator, hear the familiar sounds, open the door, and hug coworkers after a long time!

I was pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere of our Shanghai office and witnessing humans collaborating in the same physical space. The flexibility of remote work has improved life quality for some, but face-to-face collaboration is still invaluable.

Shanghai hasn’t changed much — except for the number of Chinese-made electric vehicles on the streets and all the surveillance cameras at each road crossing.

🎨 Redefining creativity

AI is shaking our societies and redefining many concepts, such as intelligence, consciousness, and even creativity.

In conversations and talks, I’m often confronted with different interpretations of intelligence. I often hear remarks such as: “but it’s not intelligent — it’s just statistics predicting the next word”, as if humans were driven by an entirely different magical machinery. We don’t fully understand how the human brain works — yet; do we have scientific proof that we are more than just a much larger statistical machine…?

In 2023, with the rise of AI-generated images (and videos), comes the creativity debate: can AI-generated images or videos be considered art creations?

ChatGPT has an opinion:

AI can be creative, but its creativity is different from human creativity. It’s driven by algorithms and data patterns. For instance, AI can generate art, music, or even new ideas by combining existing concepts. But remember, its “creativity” is based on the data it’s been trained on. It doesn’t have emotions or life experiences influencing its creations like humans do. So while AI can produce creative outputs, the depth and nuance of human creativity is unique.

Which made me think… how different are human life experiences from AI’s training data? how hard is it to simulate and take into account emotions? I am curious to hear your thoughts on this topic.

To finish, let’s get back to reality —if you’re interested in how AI can benefit your business, I recommend watching this video from the humble Andrew Ng:
