Meet the people behind Ekoru.org
Hi! My name is Ati, and together with my wife Alison, we’re behind the Ekoru search engine which helps clean and protect our oceans. We’re supported by our wonderful team members dotted around the world. We’re real people who care about our planet and are committed to cleaning and protecting our oceans.
I’m an Australian who has spent 20 years living in South East Asia with a background in developing software for telecommunications and internet service providers. Alison is from Malaysia with a long career in marketing and communications and was a country marketing manager for Nike.
Together, we live in Kuala Lumpur with our four children and Ajax. Our kids are all under 10 years of age and just starting to be curious about the world around them. They love Ajax who is a playful rescue cat we got from a shelter.
We decided to combine our respective areas of expertise (tech and marketing) to build something that would make the world around us a little bit better. After a lot of hard work ,we launched Ekoru, a search engine that helps our oceans.
Every search on the search engine helps raise money for causes related to ocean cleanup and marine health. Our servers are powered by hydro-electricity so every search is environmentally friendly too. When users click on a sponsored search result, we get paid by advertisers. We commit 60% of our revenue to our ocean partners.
Big Blue Ocean Cleanup is a fantastic organisation which has teams of people around the world who clean plastic from our oceans and coastlines, preventing our marine life from harm. Operation Posidonia is a cutting edge project by University of New South Wales which is reforesting our oceans by replanting seagrass meadows which generate oxygen and trap CO2.
