Voting in the Caribbean

Choose between the following:

a) having somebody set you and your friends on fire;

b) having somebody punch you in the face then set you and your friends on fire;

c) neither of the above, with the likelihood that either (a) or (b) will happen anyway, but that at least you won’t have been complicit in choosing it.

According to election-crazy West Indians, choice © is the crazy, irrational, unethical one.

Don’t give me the “people fought and died for your right to vote” line. Just as freedom of religion would be meaningless without the freedom to claim no religion, the right to vote is meaningless if it doesn’t include the option not to vote. On a related note, 100% voter turnout is a common occurrence… in dictatorships.

Politics isn’t about policy.
