The Ebony Body is shackled in irons

The Ebony Body is whipped and prodded

The Ebony Body is restless in pronged collars

The Ebony Mind is restricted from reading

The Ebony Mind is restricted from learning

The Ebony Mind is restricted from expression

The Ebony Spirit cannot be broken

The Ebony Spirit burns bright

The Ebony Spirit has sand

The slaves of old have lived under the boot of oppression and violence

Scars and brands cover the body while trauma and propaganda torment the mind

The spirit burns strong despite all attempts to drown it in pain and sorrows

The Oppressors have all kinds of excuses and justification for their sins

The Bible told me to do it, it’s okay

The Elders told me to do it, it’s okay

The Law told me to do it, it’s okay

But deep down every Oppressor knows the truth

It is better to wear the boot then to live under it

It is hell to live under the heels of another and they know it

They can never deny that they fear hell so they can never justify casting another into the flames

The Oppressed and the Oppressor are the same when they stand on equal ground

They both bleed

They both cry

They both love

And They both die

It is said that those who live below are home, but when the weight is lifted watch how high they fly

Watch how fast they learn to flap their wings

Watch them sing and dance

Watch them rise and lead

Watch them soar higher than anyone before

No one wants to live in hell or even the ground

We all reach for the heavens

The Ebony body has been chained

The Ebony mind has been tortured

The Ebony spirit has sand

The darker it gets the brighter it burns

The heavier it gets the higher it flies

The lower it points the straighter it stands

The Ebony Spirit can be weighed down

The Ebony Spirit can never be put down
