Rumours about the possible launch of 12-inch MacBook with a Retina Display have been around for a while now. Today, our colleagues at 9to5mac.com have provided the first pictures of the future MacBook. The pictures are actually artist renders, which were created based on detailed information 9to5mac.com were able to acquire from their sources within Apple, who they say “have used the internal prototypes of the 12-inch MacBook”.

This is what you have to know about the new 12-inch MacBook.

  • The new MacBook will be almost as small as current 11-inch MacBook Air
  • It will be 6mm narrower and 6mm taller than 11-inch MacBook Air
  • It will also be a lot thinner than 11-inch MacBook air

  • It will have the aluminium unibody design and come in “Space Gray” color in addition to silver
  • It will have redesigned edge-to-edge keyboard with keys located much closer to each other
  • It will have relocated function keys, power button and new arrow keys
  • Trackpad will be bigger, without the clicking functionality (only touch to click, no press to click)
  • The new MacBook will not have a dedicated fans
  • The redesigned speakers above keyboard will serve as ventilation holes
  • Thanks to fan-less design, the new MacBook will be as quiet as iPad

  • The new MacBook will only have one reversible USB Type-C port, standard headphone jack and dual-microphones
  • As a result, there won’t be any standard USB and Thunderbolt ports, SD Card slots, and MagSafe
  • USB Type-C port will used for charging, connecting displays and supported memory drives
  • It will ship in mid-2015, probably after WWDC

The new category product

At first look, the new MacBook might seem like a too big change to be true, but if you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. The important thing to keep in mind here is that this MacBook is not going to be a direct replacement for any of the current MacBooks. This product is going to represent a completely new category for Apple computers — a hybrid between MacBook and iPad.

An improved version of 64-bit A-series processor (like the ones we currently have inside iOS devices), amazing battery life and portability, gorgeous display, great physical keyboard and OS X inside will make this computer a dream for the users who have been trying to replace their main computers with the iPad.

12-inch MacBook will not be the computer for everybody, but it might turn out to be the best choice for many.
